Why Is Building Your Personal Brand Important?
You can have a personal brand without having a business, but its very difficult to build a business without a personal brand.
How so? Let's dive a little deeper below!
Your personal brand will direct how successful your idea is, how successful your sales are and how successful your business is.
Your personal brand is who you are, how you show up, how you carry yourself, and who you are BEING when you show up. Let's put this into perspective...
If you are the happiest, most joyful, most dependable, loving, generous person that everyone wants to be around, and whom everyone gravitates towards at a party or event, then that’s your brand.
If you are the kind of person who is always early, or always on time, you always do what you say you’ll do, and you always leave people better off than before they spoke to you, that’s your brand.
If you are the most miserable, grumpy, unapproachable, always angry kind of person, who doesn't like to help others, who always talks badly to others and is the last person in the world that anyone wants to talk to, then that’s your brand.
If you are the kind of person who is always late, is lazy, can't ever be bothered to help out, rarely delivers on time, never stick to what you've been asked to do, and ultimately cannot be trusted, then that’s your brand.
If you are the 'funny one' that everyone laughs at, but they’d never buy from you in a million years because there’s just something about you they don’t trust to deliver on your promise, then that’s your brand.
If you are the person everyone trusts, refers business to, talks positively about, is the most respected in your industry and you're known for delivering on your promises, it doesn’t matter what you sell (to a certain degree!), people will buy whatever you sell because the trust is there.
Invest Time Into Building Your Trustometer!
Studies have shown that when someone trusts you enough to buy from you the first time and you do a great job of delivering on your promise, the likelihood of them buying the next thing you offer goes up to 50%. If they buy that next thing and you do a great job of delivering on your promise again, the likelihood of them buying that next thing from you goes up to 75%. By the time you’ve sold them three things and done a great job of delivering on your promise each time, your trust currency/brand currency goes up to a 95% chance that they’ll buy from you again and by the time you’ve sold them four things, it goes up to 100% and you have a solid brand ambassador 🚀
That’s why when you recommend something to someone, they go and buy it, even if it's something they’ve never heard of before, because they trust YOU… that’s your brand.
Or when you cold-call someone and you build enough trust, credibility and rapport with them on the phone, they’ll say yes to another call without seeing any of your branding, because you’ve built trust in them. They then tell someone else about that call and describe you to them in a trusted way = that’s your brand that they are sharing, not your business branding. Brand and Branding are two very different things. Find out more about branding here >
If you get on stage and build trust, rapport, credibility and respect with your audience… that’s your brand, and, of course, you don’t need to have a logo or branding to do that. But if you get on stage with a nice looking presentation and DO all the right things without building trust, rapport, credibility and respect, then you have branding but you don’t have a brand - or you have a non-trusted, non-credible brand that needs to do more work on the trust-building part.
So, ultimately, your personal brand is trust and your business branding is your trust mark. If brand = trust and you need to build trust before someone buys from you, then you definitely need trust to sell… therefore, you need a personal brand to sell more effortlessly.
If you don't invest in building your personal brand, it will no doubt be harder to stand out from others in your field. It will be harder for you to charge what you are worth if your brand is perceived to be unknown and therefore a greater risk. It will be harder to gain recognition for your expertise and you will have a much harder time building trust, credibility and loyalty with your audience or potential clients.
